Ahead of the Football Survivor and Big5 2023/24 season opener this August 12, the tipsters have been mining the data once again:

The Mailman says…

  • My pick: Arsenal have won four league games in a row, and will be looking to make it five at Old Trafford to keep their title hopes alive. Arteta and his team look up for the final title charge and won 3-0 last time around against Bournemouth which also kept them top of the table in terms of goals scored with 88 for the season, and the most clean sheets with 17. If you compare this to their opponents on Sunday, Manchester United have scored 52 and only have 8 clean sheets, it could be a long afternoon for United. Arsenal won the reverse fixture 3-1, and it could be an even bigger win this time for the Gunners.
  • Potential pick: Bournemouth hope to bounce back from their defeat to Arsenal and cement their place in the top ten of the league. Before this loss they had back-to-back wins against Brighton and Wolves and are undefeated in their last six home games, winning four and drawing two, and scoring 14 goals. The Cherries have only lost at home in 2024 to the top three sides and host sixteenth-placed Brentford who have only won away this calendar year against Luton and Wolves.
  • Risky pick: West Ham were solidly beaten 5-0 by Chelsea on Sunday, and news of David Moyes’ departure and their poor recent form has meant an anticlimax for the Hammers this season. The Hammers could drop out of the top ten this weekend and have only won three from seventeen games in 2024, and only one of those victories was at home. They face a struggling Luton side who picked up a much-needed point against Everton in their last game and will be fighting hard for their survival!

The Teacher says…

  • My pick:While slightly wary about a game with little resting on it, the rewards for backing Bournemouth look too big. They’ve claimed 13 of the last 15 points on offer at home, while they’ve won six of nine games at the Vitality Stadium against bottom-half sides. They also have the carrot of their highest-ever Premier League finish being dangled. Brentford have won just two of their last 13 and talisman Ivan Toney hasn’t scored in 10.
  • Potential pick: Luton desperately need a win and this fixture looks a good one for them. West Ham have won one of their last 10, being crushed by Chelsea and Palace in recent games. Luton usually score – they have done in 19 of their last 20 matches – but keeping sides out has proved hard. That said, the Hammers have scored just five times in their last six with their hopes of a European return virtually over.
  • Risky pick: After Monday at Crystal Palace, this isn’t saying much but I’d be wary of trying to get with United at a big price. They look a team ready for the summer, most players knowing a new manager is on his way, others knowing their future lies elsewhere. They’ve won just two of 10 against the top six this season and now face a title-chasing side who have the most points, goals and best defence away.

Incognito Pro says…

  • My pick: Palace enjoyed an emphatic 4-0 demolition of United on Monday night. Under Oliver Glasner, the Eagles are a transformed side and are now undefeated in five games, winning four of those games and scoring 13 times. Crystal Palace won the reverse fixture against Wolves 3-2 and have beaten Wolves four times out of their last five meetings. Wolves were soundly beaten by City in their most recent fixture, and have had a real drop in form by only winning against Luton in their last eight appearances.
  • Potential pick: Since losing away to an in-form palace team, Newcastle have enjoyed two wins in a row and scored 9 times against Burnley and Sheffield United. The Magpies are undefeated in their last seven home games and host Brighton at St. James’ Park this weekend. Brighton did pick up an impressive home win against Villa on Sunday but this was their first win in seven and they have not won on the road since back in February when they beat now-relegated Sheffield United 5-0.
  • Risky pick: Manchester United looked woeful in their 4-0 defeat at Selhurst Park on Monday night. United have dropped to eighth in the league and this is the first time in their long history that they have lost 13 games in a season, and it will most likely increase to 14 as they host title contenders Arsenal this weekend. The gap between the two sides is apparent when looking at goal difference as Arsenal are +60 while United are -3!

Good luck!
