Ahead of the Football Survivor and Big5 2023/24 season opener this August 12, the tipsters have been mining the data once again:

The Mailman says…

  • My pick: Manchester City have picked up maximum points in their last two League games against Palace and Aston Villa, and are undefeated in 2024. They face Luton on Saturday who have the second-worst away record in the Premier League this season. Although they beat Bournemouth at home last weekend, Luton have yet to win on the road since Boxing Day when they beat Sheffield United 3-2.
  • Potential pick: Arsenal are also undefeated this calendar year and their win away at Brighton cemented their spot at the top of the table. The Gunners also top the table in terms of goals scored (75), and clean sheets (14) so far this season and take on a Villa side at the Emirates who drew with struggling Brentford at the weekend and lost their last away match 4-1 against City.
  • Risky pick: Manchester United came to life in the second half to get a draw against their rivals Liverpool on Sunday, but worryingly did not have a single shot on target in the first half. United have only won once in their last 6 league outings when they beat Everton, and have conceded an average of 2 goals a game in those fixtures. They face a Bournemouth team on Saturday that have won their last three home games, scoring seven times and could cause United trouble!

The Teacher says…

  • My pick:West Ham impressed last weekend with an away win at Wolves and will fancy their chances against their London rivals Fulham who have lost to both Newcastle and Forest and drawn with bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United in their last three matches. David Moyes’s side have an impressive home record against Fulham, winning the last 5 times and last losing to Fulham at home in the FA Cup twenty years ago!
  • Potential pick: Bournemouth were magnificent in the reverse fixture where they beat Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford back in December last year, and will be looking to do the same again. The Cherries lost to Luton at the weekend, but this was off the back of an unbeaten run of 5 games, where they won 4 and scored 11 times. Their opponents United have been inconsistent this season and have the second-worst goal difference in the top ten of the league this season with -1.
  • Risky pick: Brighton could be a tempting pick against Burnley on Saturday, but the Seagulls have only won three from twelve games so far in 2024 in the Premier League and were easily beaten at home by league leaders Arsenal last weekend. Brighton have several injury concerns going into the fixture which will not help their cause with many of their key players out of action. Meanwhile, their hosts Burnley who lost away at Everton last time around, had been on a three-game unbeaten streak before that loss and could see this as an opportunity to pick up some much needed points.

Incognito Pro says…

  • My pick: Manchester City will be hoping to catch up with their title rivals this weekend by inflicting a heavy defeat on Luton who they host on Saturday afternoon at the Etihad. City have not lost at home this season and will be brimming with confidence after back-to-back wins against Palace and Villa where they scored an impressive 8 times. Luton have only won against fellow strugglers Sheffield United and Everton away from home this season and have conceded more away goals than any other team with 38!
  • Potential pick: West Ham will be looking for revenge against Fulham on Sunday after they were heavily beaten 5-nil in the reverse fixture. However, their opponents Fulham have not been great away from home, only winning twice on the road so far this season.  The Cottagers are also going into this game in a dip of form with back-to-back losses and only one win in their last five matches. This is in contrast to The Hammers who have only one loss in their last seven and should be favourites to pick up all three points.
  • Risky pick: Aston Villa did cause an upset against Arsenal in the reverse fixture in December of 2023, but could be in for a long afternoon against the Gunners on Sunday who have been in excellent form lately. Villa have only beaten Wolves in their last 5 games while Arsenal have only dropped points in their 0-0 draw with City in 2024. Villa conceded 3 against Brentford last weekend and could struggle against the Arsenal attack who put three past Brighton on their last league game, and who have scored a whopping  38 goals in 2024 in the league.

Good luck!
